Of Dime and Punishment...
This Friday is the second anniversary of the death of "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, one of the greatest guitarists to ever pick up the instrument. This Friday is also the grand opening of a new little place for live music in Red Oak, Texas called Club Refined. This Friday I am also playing there with a little band called Stone Down as the headliners for the grand opening of said club.
Now, to the point of my post. This Friday I will also be paying tribute to Darrell by getting up with the guys in Shatter Me and playing bass on Pantera's song "Cemetery Gates". When I was asked to do it, I wasn't sure how it was going to work out. As I said before, Darrell was one of the most gifted guitarist to ever walk the planet and the guitarists in Shatter Me are 15 and 16 years old. Not too long to be playing to be able to wail out this song.
We started rehearsing on Sunday afternoon and the first time through the song, I couldn't believe what I was hearing. These kids ripped through this song and played the guitar solos note for note. I thought that Dime was actually in the room. Anyone who knows anything at all about Dime and Pantera knows that this is one of their earliest and most technical songs and these guys made me feel embarrassed to be on the stage with them, playing a dumbed down version of the bassline for Gates.
Anyway, I'm more excited about getting up and playing with these guys on that one song than I am about doing a headlining set with my band. Is that wrong? Don't worry. I'm still gonna have a complete blast up on stage with my bros but I'm pretty sure that Cemetery Gates is going to be the highlight of the evening.
I'll let you guys know how it goes. In the meantime, here's my little tribute to Dime on my blog.

I'm glad you said it first. Gates was definitely the highlight. Mostly because I can hit the notes and what's-his-name can't, but still. I saw you on the stage with those unexperienced kids and all I could think was, "Freakin' rock star!" It was awesome.
